Ruby was abandoned by her husband after 10 years together and 6 years of marriage. When her husband left, Ruby entered into a deep depression and struggled greatly to move forward with her life. She was unable to provide for her children, and often they would sit together and cry because they had no food and were so hungry.

Ruby felt completely abandoned by God and by the world.

Casa de Luz, together with the local church, La Hermosa, often does food hamper distribution to the most needy in our community. Ruby was the recipient of one and it was a very moving experience for her. She couldn’t believe people who didn’t know her would show such love and concern. It had a profound impact. Following this, she opened herself and her home up to her neighbour who is a member of the church. During their times together, Ruby’s neighbour was able to share the gospel with her, encourage her and told her about Casa de Luz.

During her time of depression, Ruby had fallen 8 months behind in her rent. However, once Ruby’s children started attending CDL, she was able to dedicate her full attention during the day to her work as a seamstress. She was then able to repay the months of debt she owed.

Ruby also started attending La Hermosa Church, where she learned about the love that God has for her and for her children. Over the past few years God has done a wonderful work in Ruby and has healed her heart in many ways. She feels God has brought her a new family, made up of people that were once strangers.

“I don’t feel like that broken and desperate mother that walked through the doors of Casa de Luz a few years ago.”  – Ruby

“I now know Jesus and I know that He has given us a future. Instead of only knowing rejection and abandonment, I finally know what it is like to accepted and to be truly loved.”

Since 2015, Ruby has partnered with Casa de Luz as our seamstress for House of Light Goods. She sews beautiful handmade infinity scarves out of Mexican blankets. In partnership with HOLG, Ruby’s empowered employment has given her financial stability and increased confidence in her abilities to provide for her family. Ruby is working her way to independence, and is dreaming again for herself and her future. With her increased income from HOLG, Ruby has been able to invest financially into a piece of land where she hopes to one day build a home to live with her family.

This is the cycle of poverty being broken. This is the love of God healing hearts and changing lives. This is why we exist.
